469-505-2998Do you have a backyard shed or free standing garage that you want to transform? Maybe you want to convert it into a workshop or studio. Perhaps your mother in law or college graduate needs a new place to stay, or you’re going to start hosting on Airbnb for extra income. No matter what you want your shed to become, you’ll need to make sure it has reliable electricity. At Mr. Electric of Fort Worth, we take pride in providing high quality residential and commercial electrical services for our North Texas customers. Are you feeling overwhelmed by the process of running underground power to your backyard shed? Here is some more information about how the professional installation process is handled, so you can determine if this is the best solution for you and your family.
Precautions to Consider Before Starting Your Project
Before getting started, it’s important that you’re aware of any existing electrical lines, gas lines or plumbing components that might be buried beneath your backyard. Digging without knowledge of the area could result in dangerous gas leaks, sewer line leaks and other disastrous emergencies. You’ll need to contact your local utilities to find out exactly where these lines and pipes are at, so you can plan your electrical installation accordingly.
How It’s Done
A trench will be carefully dug from your house to the outdoor building using either a shovel or a trenching machine. This trench should be about 18 inches deep, to ensure the electrical conduit is buried in accordance with current standards and codes. Then, a layer of sand will be poured in the trench, to act as a buffer against rocks and debris. PVC conduit will then be laid into the trench and extended onto the outside of the house and building using 90 degree fittings. A second layer of sand will then be poured over the pipes, followed by concrete mix if needed in some areas. After the concrete has dried, the trench area can be filled with soil again. Once the pipe has been laid, fish tape will be used to pull the electrical wires where they need to go. On the shed, the 6-gauge wires will be fed through the conduit. A sub panel will be mounted onto the shed or building. When all electrical components are appropriately installed with proper grounding wires and boxes, it’s time to install the fixtures. Lights, electrical outlets and other items can now be tied into the system. And finally, each electrical element will be thoroughly tested to ensure safety and reliability.
Why You Should Hire a Certified Electrician for This Home Improvement Project
This complex process requires professional level experience. While there are many home improvement projects that homeowners can easily accomplish without worry, handling electricity can be extremely dangerous. Improper installation could not only put yourself and others at risk of electrocution and personal injury, but it could also result in fires and extensive property damage down the road. When you hire a certified electrician for the job, you’ll know that each step is handled with the utmost care, and you’ll be ensured the project is safe, secure and up to current codes and regulations.
